This was a bucket list item for us.  We have always wanted to experience this park.  

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is an iconic American landmark featuring the colossal carved faces of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and completed in 1941, the monument symbolizes the nation's ideals of freedom and democracy. Visitors can explore the scenic Black Hills, walk the Presidential Trail for close-up views, and visit the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center to learn about the monument's history and construction. Mount Rushmore remains a testament to American heritage, attracting millions of tourists annually with its grandeur and historical significance.

Wind Cave National Park, located in South Dakota, is renowned for its intricate and extensive cave system, one of the longest in the world. Discovered in 1881, Wind Cave features unique boxwork formations, rare in other caves. Above ground, the park encompasses over 33,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie and ponderosa pine forest, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife, including bison, elk, and prairie dogs. Visitors can enjoy guided cave tours, hiking trails, and scenic drives that showcase the natural beauty of the Black Hills. Wind Cave National Park offers a blend of geological wonders and rich biodiversity.

Jewel Cave National Monument, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is the third-longest cave in the world, with over 200 miles of mapped passages. Discovered in 1900, the cave is famed for its sparkling calcite crystals and intricate formations, which give it its name. Visitors can embark on guided tours that explore the cave’s stunning underground landscapes, including its vast chambers and narrow passages. Above ground, the monument features hiking trails, a visitor center, and opportunities for wildlife viewing. Jewel Cave offers a mesmerizing subterranean adventure and a chance to appreciate the natural beauty and geological history of the region.

This is probably one of our favorite parks.. The drive through the park is beautiful, but it reminds us of a smaller version of Yellow Stone National Park.  We saw lots of animals and they have wild donkeys that were fun to see.  

Custer State Park, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is a sprawling 71,000-acre park known for its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. Visitors can explore scenic drives such as the Wildlife Loop Road, where bison, elk, and pronghorn roam freely. The park offers diverse outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, camping, and rock climbing. Notable attractions include Sylvan Lake, Needles Highway, and the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. With its mix of rolling plains, rugged mountains, and serene lakes, Custer State Park provides a picturesque and adventurous experience for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Badlands National Park, located in South Dakota, is a dramatic landscape of eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires, blended with expansive prairies. The park spans over 244,000 acres and is renowned for its striking geological formations and rich fossil beds. Visitors can explore scenic drives like the Badlands Loop Road, offering breathtaking vistas and opportunities to spot bison, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs. Hiking trails, such as the Notch Trail and Fossil Exhibit Trail, provide immersive experiences in this rugged terrain. Badlands National Park's unique topography and abundant wildlife.

The Crazy Horse Memorial, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is an ambitious and ongoing mountain carving project honoring the Lakota warrior Crazy Horse. Initiated in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski at the request of Lakota leaders, the monument aims to celebrate Native American culture and heritage. When completed, it will be the largest mountain carving in the world, depicting Crazy Horse astride a horse, pointing into the distance. Visitors can learn about Native American history and culture at the accompanying Indian Museum of North America and the Native American Cultural Center. The Crazy Horse Memorial stands as a powerful symbol of indigenous pride and perseverance.

Custer, South Dakota, is a historic town nestled in the heart of the Black Hills. Founded during the gold rush in 1875, Custer retains a charming Old West atmosphere. It serves as a gateway to several major attractions, including Custer State Park, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and Wind Cave National Park. The town offers a variety of activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and exploring nearby scenic drives like Needles Highway. 

Hill City, South Dakota, is a quaint town nestled in the heart of the Black Hills. Known as the "Heart of the Hills," it offers a rich blend of history, art, and outdoor adventure. Hill City is a hub for exploring nearby attractions such as Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Custer State Park. The town boasts charming shops, art galleries, and local wineries. The Black Hills Central Railroad offers scenic train rides through the picturesque landscape. 

Deadwood, South Dakota, is a historic town famed for its Wild West heritage. Established during the Black Hills Gold Rush in 1876, Deadwood was a bustling frontier town, attracting legendary figures like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Today, visitors can explore its rich history through preserved 19th-century architecture, museums, and reenactments. Main Street features a lively atmosphere with casinos, restaurants, and shops. Notable sites include Mount Moriah Cemetery, where famous outlaws are buried, and the Adams Museum. 

We have not attempted Sturgis during the rally, but it is on our bucket list.  When we went the town was quiet, but we were able to stop at the Harley Store and get a t-shirt.  

Sturgis, South Dakota, is renowned worldwide for its annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, a massive event that draws hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts each August. Founded in 1878, this small town in the Black Hills transforms into a bustling hub of activity during the rally, featuring concerts, races, and motorcycle shows. Beyond the rally, Sturgis offers visitors a glimpse into its rich history at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. 

Rapid City, South Dakota, is a vibrant city nestled at the eastern edge of the Black Hills. Known as the "Gateway to the Black Hills," Rapid City offers a blend of outdoor adventure, cultural attractions, and historic landmarks. Visitors can explore nearby national parks such as Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, and Wind Cave National Park. Downtown Rapid City features art galleries, shops, and restaurants, along with attractions like the Journey Museum and Storybook Island.
